Surely
goodness and love will follow
Surely
goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in
the house of the LORD forever. (Psalm
23:6)
Here is an
emphatic statement made by the Psalmist in one of the well known Psalms, Psalm
23. It’s something that the Psalmist has learnt by experience in his life. He
has learnt that Jehovah God is his Good Shepherd and so he shall not want. He
is sure that his needs will be met because his shepherd cares for him.
When we come
to Christ i.e. when we accept him as our Lord & Savior, He takes over the
reins of our life, so as to say. The word Savior itself means “One who saves”
and the word “Jesus” also means “He saves”.
It’s
interesting how the different versions of the Bible have recorded this verse.
Surely
goodness and loving kindness… (New American Standard Version)
Surely or only
goodness, mercy, and unfailing love… (The Amplified Bible)
Surely
goodness and love… (New International Version)
Surely your
goodness and unfailing love… (New Living Translation)
Surely
goodness and mercy… (King James Version, Revised Standard version & New
KJV)
Goodness,
love, kindness, mercy……what more does a believer need? And more interesting is
how the New Living Translation puts this verse. It says, “Surely your goodness
and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life…..” Notice the words
“unfailing love” & “pursue”. I think that gives a lot more weight to this
verse.
Imagine
“goodness, love, kindness & mercy” pursuing a person, all because he is
living for Christ. What more can one ask for?
And “unfailing
love” is only what our Lord & Savior can give. How blessed we are to be the
recipients of this.
Our
loving Father in heaven says, “I
have loved
you with an everlasting love; I have
drawn you with loving-kindness.”
(Jeremiah 31:3)
