The LORD is
a refuge for the oppressed
The
LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. (Psalm
9:9)
Oppression has
become a common term in our life and times. Look around you and all you see and
hear is news of oppression. Be it within families, cities, states or nations,
oppression exists in varying degrees everywhere. Feuds within families are so
very common, with the stronger ones oppressing the weaker ones. And some of
these continue for a long long time. Even in the case of countries, the
stronger ones dictate the terms and the weaker ones have to obey.
The psalmist
here is saying that, “whatever be the situation, turning to Jesus for help,
results in deliverance for the oppressed.” Jesus’ name itself means “He saves”.
He is the true Savior and if anyone wholeheartedly trusts in Him, He will
deliver him/her from oppression.
Jesus said, “I
am the Good Shepherd”. And He established this fact by laying down His life for
the salvation of mankind. All one has to do is ‘believe’ in this great fact to
begin one’s journey on the path to eternal life with God.
Jesus is our
stronghold in times of trouble. There are people who think of/ commit suicide
when they are confronted with problematic situations that they cannot solve by
themselves. They tend to lose all hope and become frustrated and depressed. But
if a person trusts in Jesus, he/she can put the matter in to His able hands and
receive divine help.
In Psalm 46,
verse 1, the psalmist says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present
help in times of trouble.” Yes! God is truly our refuge.
Are you
suffering from oppression of any kind today? Do not despair. Jesus is your
refuge and your stronghold. Trust in Him. He is your Good Shepherd. He will not
let you fall. He will uphold you and your dear ones with His righteous and
mighty hands.
