Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart

Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. (Psalm 27:14)

Waiting is mostly a painful process. Ask a lady who has to carry a fetus for more than nine months in her womb and she will tell you how difficult it is. That’s not the only thing that people have to wait for though; there are millions of other things. By the time one reaches middle age, it would probably be a big list, if one wrote down what all we have waited for.

David, the shepherd boy had to wait a long time to become the king of Israel. Though Samuel the prophet had anointed him and proclaimed that he would be king of Israel, it was a long time after that, that he really became the king. Of course he had a taste of what the palace would be like when he was called in to the service of King Saul. But he was hounded by Saul after that for a long time for no fault of his.

Times come when we wonder, why we are at the receiving end of wrongs which we have not done. But God is righteous. He will not let injustice be done to us. Yet often we have to wait for his deliverance. The Psalmist here is instructing himself and us to “wait” and “wait for the Lord”. Not only that, he says, “Be strong and take heart”.

Often we get depressed when we do not receive a quick reply from the Lord. Some of us get irritated and accuse God. It’s true that we are not “faith heroes” and have our varied frailties and God is so understanding and long suffering. He loves us not because we are in the “purest” denomination, whichever that may be, but just because “He is love”.

Have you been waiting for a reply from the Lord for something? Well, be strong and take heart. God will answer your prayers.
