You have
filled my heart with greater joy
You
have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new wine
abound. (Psalm 4:7)
David, here is
testifying to an inner “joy” that the Lord gave him because he lived close to
the Lord. It’s not only the joy that he experienced during times of peace but
also the joy that he had because of spiritual contentment. He says it’s a
‘greater’ joy. A joy greater than what one has because of material gain.
David had
experienced both riches and poverty in his life. As a shepherd he lived a
simple life but when he reached the palace his life became complex. For a while
he enjoyed the status as the king’s son-in-law, but later he had to flee from
the palace and then live in the most obscure of places- caves, wilderness and
even in the Philistine camp. But he learned a great truth and that’s what he
writes here. True joy can be found when one lives close to the Lord.
Material
things do bring joy, but there is a ‘greater joy’ which can be found in one’s
close fellowship with the Lord. More joy than when grain and new wine abound.
